Brownie Watch

LINK TO ACT EXEMPTING THE TOWNS OF CHAPEL HILL AND CARRBORO AND THE CITY OF ASHEVILLE FROM COMPETITIVE BIDDING REQUIREMENTS WHEN LETTING CONTRACTS FOR USE AS PART OF LOCAL PILOT PROGRAMS AIMED AT INCREASING ENERGY EFFICIENCY, AND TO AUTHORIZE THE TOWNS OF CHAPEL HILL AND CARRBORO AND THE CITY OF ASHEVILLE TO ENTER INTO LEASES FOR THE SITING AND OPERATION OF A RENEWABLE ENERGY FACILITY FOR UP TO TWENTY YEARS WITHOUT TREATING IT AS A SALE AND WITHOUT GIVING NOTICE BY PUBLICATION

The appearance being that now that Newman is on County Commission, he is free to take advantage of sweetheart legislation for any City project.

Link to Brownie Newman registered lobbyist (was a lobbyist during time on City Council)  Legislators used to have to ask Newman if he was in their office representing Asheville or as a lobbyist. However, in the reports his lobbying expenses are nearly always $0. Possibly because the city was paying him to go over there and footing the bill and he could kill two birds with one stone?

At 4.13.13 meeting Newman proposed:"A "Buncombe County Energy Independence Initiative" proposed by Brownie Newman that would commit the county to reducing its carbon emissions by 2 percent per year until it reaches a total reduction of 80 percent."

FLS presentation at Buncombe County School Board work session 8.2.12
on FLS's reason for not installing panels they were awarded contract by Buncombe County for, yet as reported in a recent ACT article, they have a $30,000,000 line of credit.

Brownie Newman is asked about ethics of his being awarded Enka Solar Initiative contract; says all was above board. Fails to mention  legislation shown at top of this page.
